Sarus Elysium

The Sarus crane, The State Bird of Utter Pradesh, holds a special place in indian lore. The lrgend has it that the sage Valmiki cursed a hunter killing a saurs crane and was then inspired to write the epic “RAMAYANA”.

The species was a close contender to indian peafowl as the national bird of india. Among the Gondi people, the tribes classified as “five-god worshipers” consider the saurs crane as sacred.

The sarus is widely thought to pair for life and death of one partner is thought to lead to the other pinning to death. They are a symbol of marital virtue and in part of Gujarat, talking a newlywed couple to see a pair of saurs cranes is custemary.
